Dominique’s story
Dominique had turned to food since she was small because of anxiety at home. Her step-father had an alcohol problem and she spent much of her childhood in fear, never knowing what would happen next. She went to bed afraid and faced each day nervously. As soon as she awoke she would go downstairs and see if there was anything to munch on – normally cake. She was always hungry and her mum, to whom she was close, was pleased she ate readily because her older brother was very difficult about food.
Throughout her life she was always a bit overweight and being sensitive in nature, took comments seriously, feeling unaccepted and unacceptable. She tried fad diets and healthy eating plans but still anxiety and feelings of insecurity got the better of her. She found it affected her whole life – how she thought, how she felt and how she looked.
Relationships were full of insecurity too, and after a string of bad ones she became seriously depressed. She began drinking to alleviate some of the pressure until it began to affect her health and pocket. Her GP put her in touch with a centre that could offer her a mixture of counselling, hypnotherapy and acupuncture, and she gradually began to make progress. Dominique began to realise her self-worth and her self-esteem became healthier. She was able to control her drinking and take important steps to improve her life.
